Wish vs Reality.

Have you ever wished that there was a “Get Out of Your Responsibilities” spell that a fairy godmother could wave over you and spare you the agony on those days when life is just too hard?

Don’t judge me. In desperation, you’d be surprised what you wish for. Except this only happens in the Disney movies my kids watch and is not reality.

Do you feel overcommitted and overwhelmed? Exhausted and expended. Stressed and stretched too thin. Depleted and empty. Restless and on edge. BURNED OUT!

Are you weak, weary or worn out?

I’ve been there. And it’s not a place I’d want to find myself ever again.

Crazy Busy.

As a wife, mom of 3 adorable little ones and a demanding career as a physician, life is busy, with crazy schedules, hectic days and more times than I’d like to admit, things are OUT OF CONTROL.

And for someone who likes to be in control, or seem like I have it all under control, I have wrestled hard to juggle it all for so long.

I thought I could to do all. So I kept stretching myself beyond my capacity, bandwidth and margin. And ignoring all the warning signs, I pushed myself to the point of BURN OUT.

The deep exhaustion felt like someone had snatched the wind underneath my sail and I “crashed” miserably.

Weak, weary and worn out. Zapped of every ounce of energy left in me. I came undone. The hard reality finally sank in. I had burned the candle on all ends with my crazy busy life until I was BURNED.

Rest Deficit.

REST was what I desperately needed. It’s undeniably what we all need.

Is rest elusive or obtainable? Why is something so simple hard to obtain? Why do we struggle with rest?

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that millions of people struggle with falling or staying asleep every night.

This epidemic has led to poor work performance, less productivity, depression and overall dissatisfaction with quality of life.

Sleep deprivation may only be a brief problem but finding genuine rest is more than just being able to sleep.

Rest may appear hard to find because we live in a culture where everyone is running at breakneck speed and hurry is not only outside of us, it’s within us.

Called to Rest.

In Matthew 11:28-30 MSG, Jesus calls us to rest in Him. “Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion? Come to me. Get away with me and you’ll recover your life. I’ll show you how to take a real rest. Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it. Learn the unforced rhythms of grace. I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you. Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

We are called to rest. God rested from His work of creation. “For anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from their works, just as God did from his.” – Hebrews 4:10.

Genuine rest reenergizes the body, renews the mind and revives the spirit. That’s the kind of rest we need.

Rest is not an option. Whether or not you choose to slow down, pause or lay your body down, eventually your body will shut down.

Rest is required for health.

It is the secret to longevity, a productive and satisfying life.

Rest helps you to revitalize, restore, refresh, renew and recover your life.
