The Hardest Thing.

Why is REST the hardest thing for us to do? We find it easier to keep busy doing things that are not even productive than doing nothing at all.

Most of us are uncomfortable with the idea of doing nothing at all. In fact, whenever I get a chance to sit still, my mind wanders and is bombarded with all the things that I could be doing right this moment. Mindfulness is hard!

Quieting our busy minds requires effort and deliberately choosing to soak in the beauty of a quiet moment. Which for some of us doesn’t come by often especially in my world with 3 little kids, quiet moments are a gift to my sanity.

Interestingly,  as important as REST is to our bodies, minds and whole being, it’s still one of the hardest and probably the last thing we want to do deliberately.

Distractions.

We live our lives in constant motion such that it takes a while for us to unwind and fully come to a place of REST.

So many things are fighting for our attention: our family, work, other commitments, phones, social media, TV and so much more. We’re easily distracted by all the things that we think we should be doing instead of resting.

No wonder why we could sleep, get a spa, go on vacation or do all the things we know to do in hopes that it will give us the rest we need but yet we don’t feel rested.

Apparently, the only time we make REST a priority, is when we’re desperate enough. From being overly tired, overwhelmed, stressed, burned out and restless, that we are willing to try something different than just a quick respite from our crazy busy lives.

A Unique Gift.

Rest is not a one size fits all project. There is no ABC approach to an instantly happy and well-rested life. It just doesn’t exist.

Finding REST is as individualized as your DNA. Your path and strategies to find rest, may not be the same as another person.

But I can promise you that as you begin to understand the role rest plays in your life, you will realize its importance and that it is truly a gift to us.

James 1:17 says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above.” Rest is a gift that is promised to all who are weary and burdened (Matthew 11:28).

Instead of striving and tirelessly working from dawn to dusk, rest is promised to those He loves (Psalm 127:2).

The Importance of REST.

Whether we choose to rest or are forced by our circumstances, REST is so important to our well-being.

As you recognize the important role rest plays in your life, I hope you would begin to:

• Replace the stress of a busy life with the peace of intentional rest

• Identify your rest deficit and discover which types of rest you need most

• Recover your life and sanity from the effects of a chronic rest deficit

• Renew your energy and experience the benefits of a well-rested life

• Exchange the quilt of your unfurnished to-do list for the freedom to choose rest

• Overcome being overwhelmed by the life you’ve worked so hard to create

Finally, get comfortable with the idea of doing nothing at all. It’s not a waste of time. On the contrary, rest helps you recover lost time.
